Civil Disobedience and Intentionality with Eric Kirk

The campus protests at universities across the country have mostly ended with the end of the semester. But they raised a lot of issues, at least in my mind. Why were the protests directed at universities, instead of, say, elected leaders or embassies? Did their strong support for Gazans veer into antisemitism? Most of the country saw the protests through the lens of the media, and as we know, if it bleeds it leads. So were the YouTubes and images that filtered out of campuses representative at all?

I could think of no one better to discuss these issues with than Eric Kirk. Eric is an attorney in Humboldt County, and has advised some of the campus protesters at Cal Poly Humboldt. More importantly, he is a veteran of lefty protests and learned civil disobedience at his mother’s knee. At the age of 4, he was already a veteran activist.

He has participated in multiple protests for several causes since then, and is always done so intentionally—whether it was spending nights in jail, or candlelight vigils. He also thinks deeply about the causes he chooses to take on, and is not afraid of nuance.

He also co-hosts Redwood Wonk, a political commentary radio show on Access Humboldt, and All Things Reconsidered on KMUD.
